Alcalá de Henares |
Next to the building of the old hospital, it is located in the centre of the Mayor Street and is opened for tourists. In the inside there is a nice courtyard surrounded by arcades, as is typical in Castilla. The entrance is located in the Mayor Street.
Constructed in the 12th Century, as the commercial axis of the Jewish community in its route towards France, it is still nowadays a commercial street. 390 m long and 8 m wide, it is the longest arcade-street in Europe. The columns of the arcades, currently made of stone, where originally made from wood, until the the 14th Century in which they were replaced by the current ones.Under the arcades, it is possible to see in the roof peepholes through which neighbours could see who was knocking on their door. Currently, only remain those which correspond to the numbers 13, 17, 29 and 32 of the street).
