The University was founded by Cardinal Cisneros in 1499. The front was built on top of the original one, made of bricks. Based on a Plateresque style it is one of the greatest works of the Spanish Renaissance. Bordering the three central streets, and in honor to Cardinal Cisneros, we can find the symbol of its ordination, the Franciscan Cord, which can also be found bordering the front. Its auditorium is the host, every April 23rd of the price-giving ceremony, handled-out by the Spanish King and Queen, of the Cervantes’ literature price.
