Monument to Cervantes

Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, author of "El Quijote" was born in Alcalá. Due to this fact, his name is addressed in many streets, monuments, prices, etc. His house of birth, located in Mayor Street, is opened to be visited.

Cervantes' Square Cervantes' Square is the main square of the Town. Having a large dimension, it may surprise that only half of it has arcades. The reason for this to be, is because in the past, rather than being the point where all the community integrates, it was a border between the Jewish and the Christian communities, first, and after the border between the civil and the university communities, thus the University side does not have arcades. The main interesting sites at the Cervantes' Square are: The Town-hall Cervantes' Monument (sculpture) The Music Stand The Circle of Contributors, with a nice Neo-mudejar front The "Oidor" Chapel Saint Mary's Tower.

Town-Hall

The Town-hall is the old college of dying people, which received this name because its students where required to pay their scholarship by providing spiritual support to those ill people that were about to die in any house in the town. After that it has been the headquarters of the National Guard, a Community Centre and a barrack of the Civil Guard, until it became the Town-hall in 1870.
