The
warm summer nights are also illuminated by the impressive artificial geyser,
from which an enormous jet of water shoots forth, falling back into the sea
in front of the Canfali Balcony, a magical reminder that urban life first emerged
at this point on the coast. In this area, from the port lying next to the secluded
MAL PAS BEACH , a boat with a glass bottom sails every hour daily taking passengers
to Benidorm Island. The island is a geographical feature from where pirates
of centuries past would prepare their landings to violently loot the coast.
Today, however, this route is run every day by peaceful passengers who come
to the island in the daytime to enjoy its scenery and, once near the island,
to contemplate, through the glass bottom of the boat, the spectacular view of
the incredible marine life reserve covering the sea floor.
The monumental puig Campana Peak, which, standing at 1,406 metres, rises up
proudly behind the town in defiance of the 30, 40, and even 50 storey buildings
that occupy the land that once was grazing land and Mediterranean forest. The
precision cut cleft in the peak is attsibuted to the courageous Roland. To honour
one of this heroic acts, carried out duringthe war expeditions of Charlemagne,
he cut out the enormous piece of rock that is missing with just one solid blow
of his sword. And as this rock rolled into the sea, it formed the solitary Island
of Benidorm. The people say that the montain has the magnetic capacity to attract
other worlds. Consequently, the first beings to populate Benidorm were extraterrestrials
who landed on the Peak in their spacecraft, thus giving rise to the regular-shaped
cut.
Still
surviving in this small historic centre is its San Jaime Parish Church, built
in the 18th century. The interior displays a few interesting paintings attributed
to Giovani Tognese. Also to be seen are the foundations of the castle, whose
construction was begun on the order of King Philip II by the Italian master
Antonelli. On one of the exterior walls of the church, oneīs attention is drawn
to the work of ceramic art commissioned by the Patron Saintīs Day Committee
to illustrate the sea-faring tradition as a result of which the festivities
in honour of the local have come to be held in November.

Benidorm
The
Playa del Poniente offers the same quality of water and clean sand, but has
just a few more hours of sun. This beach is a bit smaller and narrower than
the Playa Levante. Its facilities offer the same degree of comfort and safety.
Some people prefer it because it is more peaceful. This feeling of relative
seclusion is most noticeable at the end of the beach, in the part known as La
Cala.
