Peñíscola
The castle and its indisputable value we face then the controversial figure
of Martines de Luna, the Aragonese Benedicto XIII pope between 1394 and 1417
and anti-pope until his death (1423) this last an era which gave celebrity to
Peñiscola.Born in Llueca, of a notable family between the second and
third decades of the XIV century and after the military career studied law in
the university of Montpellier.At just Clemente VII dead, the conclave unanimately
alected him Pope.In 1938 was beseiged and only five cardinals remained faithful
to the pontiff.
The
actual sanctuary, sucessor of that tradition was constructed at the begining
of the XVIII century in an airy and beautiful Baroque-Valencian style.The works
were advanced and supported by the govenor, Sancho de Echevario. The primitive
image which also disappeared in the Spanish civil conflict of 1936, was substituted
by a new one in 1953, according to the desire and the popular subscription opened
with this end.
