Segovia
Alcazar of Segovia
The fortress is strategically located between the rivers
Eresma and Clamores, surrounded by thick vegetation. It was designed, from the
very beginning, as a fortress, although its exact origin remains unknown: roman
or perhaps even earlier. It was many secret passageways and underground floors,
which climb down to the river and are communicated with some of the city’s palaces.
It has been occupied, since the 12th century, by several kings of Castilla,
from Alfonso X to the Catholic Kings and from Felipe II to Carlos III. In 1862
it was partially destroyed due to a massive fire. The restauration works finalised
by the end of the 19th century. In this period, the General Military Archive
of the Kingdom was hosted in the fortress.
