CATHEDRAL
The cathedral of Santa María, located in the Major square of Segovia, is a huge temple made of limestone which began to be constructed in 1525. The old cathedral, in a Romanic style, was opposite the Alcazar (the fortress) and suffered the consequences of the Communities’ War. It was then when Carlos V proposed to build a new cathedral. In order to reduce construction costs, some elements of the old cathedral where moved into the new temple, such as the choir, the cloister, the baptismal font, etc. Its style and chronology define it as the last Gothic cathedral. The inside contains great art works, wich an excellent quality and developed by some of the best masters.
