Known
as the "Shield Palace", the Palace of the Marqueses de la Conquista is, definitely,
one of the most emblematic buildings in Trujillo. The balcony is almost entirely
decorated with plateresque elements. The busts are those of Francisco Pizarro
and Hernando Pizarro. On top of them, there is a huge shield with the weapons
that the King gave to the conquistador of Perú.
The
equestrian statue of Francisco Pizarro, located in the Plaza Mayor, was made
by the north american artist Carlos Rumsey. The statue is made from bronze,
weights 6,500 Kgs, and stands on granite which was brought from the neighbour
municipality of Santa Cruz.
The
main square of Trujillo has been, over centuries, the commercial and activity
center of city, with markets and entertainments. The muslim and jewish areas
used to be located next around it, as well as the handicrafters and traders.
The original Plaza del Arrabal, left place, in the 16th Century, to a renaissance
and elegant square, where all the noble families of the city used to locate
their homes.
San
Martin church has one single nave, covered by a ribbed vault, and side chapels
which are closed with reinassance-style grilles. Outdoores it has two doors,
one with a classic reinassance style, the other with a gothic style, known as
the "Limes Door", due to the fruits that decorate the door.
