| Located in a privileged area of Southern Extremadura, you can find Zafra, half way between Merida and Seville, with over 15.000 residents, with the title of "city" since 1883. In 1965 it was catalogued as a National History Monumental Complex, title which the fortress already had since 1931. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

The second owner of this domain, an essential person for the history of Zafra, Lorenzo Sanz de Figueroa, ordered to build in 1437 one of the main buildings of Zafra, el Alcazar (the Fortress), which gave place around it, in a nice medieval layout, to many attractive and very narrow streets. Lorenzo Sanz de Figueroa also ordered the city to be bordered by a city-wall in 1442, funding as well Santiago Hospital and finalising the construction of Santa Clara convent. |
